The town name Heyl derives from the Cornish for estuary; indeed the church and land at Phillack was written as Egloshayle in the 12th Century.

The first large scale development at Hayle Harbour was for the area’s 18th Century mining industry and Copperhouse Pool was developed at this time to allow the passage of vessels further up stream.

Continuing delapidation of the present harbour and structures at East Quay and South Quay have lead to a number of redevelopment schemes being proposed in recent years. The most recent began in 2004 and appears close to approval in 2009.
